Analysis of Contending Flow Pairs in Wireless Networks

چکیده
Wireless networks based on the IEEE 802.11 Media Access Control protocol are used widely for many applications. However, in certain situations, severe unfairness arises between flows that share the wireless channel in a spatial region. In this paper, we identify several different scenarios that can arise for two contending flows, perform theoretical analysis on the fairness in each of the scenarios, and propose a probabilistic model for one of the scenarios that can be extended to the others. We find that our analysis matches previous research on presence of unfairness, and identify the incomplete symmetric information problem that leads to short term unfairness. The analysis and the probabilistic model are validated through experimental results.

A Fair Medium Access Protocol Using Adaptive Flow-Rate Control Through Cooperative Negotiation Among Contending Flows in Ad Hoc Wireless Network with Directional Antenna
Medium Access Control protocols proposed in the context of ad hoc networks primarily aim to control the medium access among contending nodes using some contention resolution schemes. However, these protocols do not necessarily guarantee a fair allocation of wireless medium among contending flows. Our objective in this paper is to adaptively adjust the flow-rates of contending flows, so that eac...

Fair scheduling is an ideal candidate for fair bandwidth sharing and thereby achieving fairness among the contending flows in a network. It is particularly challenging for ad hoc networks due to infrastructure free operation and location dependent contentions. As there is no entity to serve coordination among nodes, we need a mechanism to overcome inherent unreliability of the network to provid...
متن کاملCongestion Control Approaches Applied to Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a specific category of wireless ad-hoc networks where their performance is highly affected by application, life time, storage capacity, processing power, topology changes, the communication medium and bandwidth. These limitations necessitate an effective data transport control in WSNs considering quality of service, energy efficiency, and congestion control. ...

As depicted in Figure 1, today’s wireless local area networks (WLANs) concurrently support a plethora of user applications with diverse connectivity and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Wireless traffic flows contending for resources can degrade performance for one or more of the wireless applications. Delay sensitive applications may face high latency in the presence of competing wireles...
متن کاملOutlier Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks Using Distributed Principal Component Analysis
Detecting anomalies is an important challenge for intrusion detection and fault diagnosis in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To address the problem of outlier detection in wireless sensor networks, in this paper we present a PCA-based centralized approach and a DPCA-based distributed energy-efficient approach for detecting outliers in sensed data in a WSN. The outliers in sensed data can be ca...
